This Privacy Policy describes how Palate handles your information.
When you sign in with Apple, we receive your name and email — only if you choose to share them. We never see your Apple ID password. We also store, on your device and optionally in your private iCloud, the data you create inside the app: favorite dishes, allergies, dietary preferences, scan history, photos you take of menus, and streak data.
Menu photos you take are sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) for analysis so we can recommend dishes. The AI provider does not retain your photos for training. Photos may be saved on your device and in your private iCloud so you can revisit past scans.
Your data lives in two places: locally on your device, and in your own private iCloud account if you're signed into iCloud. We operate a small relay service that forwards your menu scans to the AI provider; this relay does not store your photos or personal data — it only passes the request through and returns the response.
Palate uses Anthropic's Claude AI service to analyze menus and generate recommendations. When you scan a menu, the photo and your stated preferences (favorites, allergies, dietary mode) are sent to Anthropic's API for processing. Anthropic's privacy policy applies to this data: anthropic.com/legal/privacy.
We do not sell your data. We do not run advertising. We do not share your data with anyone outside the AI provider needed to deliver recommendations. We do not track your location, beyond an optional one-time lookup to find a restaurant on Yelp if you choose to use that feature.
If you subscribe to Palate Premium, the purchase is processed by Apple. We never see your payment details. Apple shares only the fact that you have an active subscription so the app can unlock premium features.
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings → Account → Delete My Account. This wipes your local data, removes your records from your private iCloud, and signs you out. After deletion, the only remaining trace is the Apple Sign-In linkage, which you can revoke yourself in iOS Settings → Apple ID → Sign in with Apple.
Palate is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has used the app, contact us and we will delete their data.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be highlighted in the app on the next launch.
